Do you have a passion for storytelling and creating short films? We are seeking short films from middle school and high school students, ages 13-18. Your mission is to create and submit a short film – between 90 seconds and 4 minutes - across one of the following themes:

Theme 1: How Education Opens Doors 
Create a video to inspire your peers about the importance of an education. Some themes you might consider are:
  • The importance of graduation
  • The power of mentorship
  • How education prepares you for the jobs of the future
Theme 2: Cyberbullying
Create a video to highlight the importance of positivity and kindness in a world where many young people face bullying (or may have bullied others). Some themes you might consider are:
  • How can mobile phones be used to spread positivity and kindness
  • The importance of stepping in to help others when they are facing bullying
Theme 3: Distracted Driving
Create a video to remind your peers why it’s an important not to drive distracted. Some themes you might consider are:
  • How everyone in a car has a responsibility to make sure a driver isn’t distracted
  • Nothing on a cell phone is more important than safe driving

PRIZES

• 1st Place:   All-expense paid trip (with parent/guardian chaperone) to participate in a Fresh Films summer or spring break program approximately 5-8 days in length, and a Camera Equipment Kit*
 2nd Place:  1-day Fresh Films workshop for winner and up to 9 friends in the winner's hometown, and a Camera Equipment Kit*
 3rd Place:   Camera Equipment Kit*

*Camera Equipment Kit includes digital video camera and lens, slate and microphone for recording audio, plus SD/memory cards. The approximate retail value is $2,000.

ENTRY & VIDEO REQUIREMENTS

  • Your original short film must incorporate one of the above themes
  • Length: Film must be a minimum of 90 seconds, not to exceed 4 minutes, including credits
  • Supported video file type:  .mp4
  • Language: Film must be in English
  • Must be original work completed by the student that enters
  • Filmmakers should avoid any trademarked names or logos of images appearing in their film
  • Selected finalists will be required to provide talent and location release clearance forms. If actors are under 18, talent release forms will require parent/guardian signature.

JUDGING CRITERIA

For the youth category, winners are selected primarily based on the originality and promise of their vision. Don’t have professional-level equipment? That’s ok! Entries filmed on mobile devices are also accepted, and your entry will be judged using the following criteria:

  • Originality of message
  • Creativity
  • Characterization
  • Written description of vision for the film

ELIGIBILITY

Students must be currently enrolled in middle school or high school, ages 13-18. Must be U.S. resident. Finalists will be required to provide proof of enrollment documentation.
